Beira Alta Restaurant ~ About us, our culture & some reviews:
Portuguese Culture:
When indulging in a delightful dish one can never truly experience the taste & flavours
in isolation to the history and culture of its origins. The owners of Beira Alta, proudly
Portuguese Paul & Janet Guimaraes recognise that history, art & culture are integral
to the taste, flavours, presentation and enjoyment of their exquisite menu continually
served with a dash of panache.

Their superb
Beira Alta venture assumes the dual worlds of polished, suave
sophistication and charming villas, mountains & beaches evocative of Portugal.
Although current and contemporary in its approach to decor, style and service, a
closer look at the details conveys the essence of a regal bona fide Portugal with
hints of Portuguese history, art, literature and architecture trickling through the walls
serving as an education, if not through the decor & style, through the noble, respectful
Portuguese tradition of genial hospitality.

The history, culture and tradition of Portugal and influences thereof are infused in the
delicious seafood dishes served at Beira Alta, akin to that of the abundant
Mediterranean, North African and Atlantic shores of Portugal, bringing about a feeling of saudade if charming Portugal has ever been a chosen
destination. The menu is substantial with a variety of meat dishes and other delectable Portuguese dishes, desserts and wines nicely composed
with the Continental flavours of the Mediterranean.

And if you pay close attention your ears might even befall the sound of a traditional Portuguese Fado (traditional music of Portuguese sailors).
Whatever the occasion, keep your senses peeled for that undeniable taste of Portugal.

A Few Reviews:

'...the décor at Beira Alta (Jo'burg) conveys a feeling of opulent reminiscence of the Palaçe De Pena, in Sintra, somewhat regal, a little decadent. The
relaxed atmosphere is further enhanced by the selection of music, ranging from Portuguese to jazz and world music. A terrace is welcoming on
pleasant evenings. The cuisine is traditional Portuguese, spicy though fortunately not always hot, made by chefs from the homeland. As can be
expected, the selection of seafood and traditional dishes will satisfy even the most ardent Portuguese diner.'

'… Food is prepared using only the freshest ingredients. The owner, Paul Guimaraes, has been involved in restaurants for many years, having owned
Moosehead in Rosebank Mall and, the ever-famous, J.B Rivers in Hyde Park. In Ballito, casually stylish décor features large wrought iron chandeliers
hanging from an open-beam ceiling. Tables are set with navy and white checked linen; wicker chairs are comfortable and large glass windows
surround much of the restaurant. Clients are treated like family and the general ambience is both welcoming and comforting.
The menu lists a host of popular Portuguese dishes. The wine list carries some of the best local & imported brands and service is impeccable.'
